The book „Social, emotional and intercultural competencies for inclusive school environments across Europe: Relationships matter“ brings in the insights from the three-year learning process of the HAND in HAND: Social and Emotional Skills for Tolerant and Non-discriminative Societies Erasmus K3 policy experimentation project that targeted the need detected in Europe and internationally to develop inclusive societies (schools and classrooms) that allow every student to feel accepted and be able to achieve their potential, particularly in response to increasing migration trends. HAND in HAND seeks to achieve this by fostering the social, emotional and intercultural/transcultural competencies of students and school staff in the whole-school approach. The list of fundamental questions the monograph deals with are: What are social, emotional and intercultural/transcultural competencies? How do we promote them in schools? What outcomes do we expect on the individual, classroom and school level? How do we measure them and how do we evaluate the expected effects? How to assure high-quality implementation and transferability across contexts? How are these competencies established on a system level and which areas are deficient? The monograph addresses these questions, one by one, providing a holistic overview of social, emotional and intercultural/transcultural competencies that moves beyond the borders of a specific project.
You are kindly invited to read the interview with dr. Svenja Vieluf and dr. Nina Roczen on HAND in HAND project, which was published on DIPF blog. The interview is in German language.

Framed by the EU-project Hand in Hand focusing on Social, Emotional and Intercultural (SEI) competencies among students and school staff the paper discusses implementation and professional competencies based on a literature review. Five themes were identified: 1) Intercultural/transcultural competency is not often referred to in the same research as social-emotional learning, though socio-emotional aspects appear to be `in the core´, 2) it is crucial to be aware of agency among school staff in a SEI-implementation, 3) successful implementation is about more than the activities in the specific program, it is rather about elements in synergy and professional learning over time, 4) the subtle balance between adaptation and fidelity might best be addressed in an adaptive curriculum emphasizing active ingredients, and 5) this is a field with many intervention studies, but it is urgent to consider if the psychometric measures are sufficiently sensitive to catch the subtle changes related to SEI-competencies.

Interview with Maria Rasmusson
In February 2019 an interview with Maria Rasmusson on HAND in HAND project was published in a Swedish journal for school counsellors. The title of the interview is “Cooperation for inclusion” and it includes a description of the project and the program for school staff and students. Since the interviewer was also exploring the role of the students’ health team in Swedish schools (Elevhälsa), Maria Rasmusson emphasised the workers in this field (nurses, counsellors, psychologists) have a great knowledge about students well-being and that they could have a key role in supporting teachers to work more preventively. The interview is in the Swedish language.

The catalogue presents a collection of evidence-based SEI programmes for students. Through researching the background and practices that have already been used in the consortium countries and worldwide, it was explored what already exists, what works and what can be learnt from previously developed SEI programmes when planning our own programme, with a view to advancing policy, practice and research.
The catalogue presents a collection of evidence-based SEI programmes and research examining implementation and facilitation for school staff. Based on a review of the international research and the practices, that have already been used in the consortium countries, experiences and recommendations for planning the Hand in Hand SEI-programme with professional development for school staff are condensed.
